Drying Snake gourds

nyackbackyardOctober 3, 2009

This year I grew these really cool green snake gourds that range from about 5" to 24" long. I think they'd be great to use on pumpkins as ears or antenae, or as fingers on a giant spooky hand. But since they're still on the vine and it's been really damp here, I'm wondering if there's a quick way to dry them in time for Halloween. Anybody tried this?

I see that there has been no response to your question.
I, myself, have not grown any snake gourds. So I ask you:
are they white-flowering gourds? If yes then just leave them out there if there is no danger of animals. Or, when the stems get brown, harvest them and hang them somewhere, your porch, tree, garage, .. until fully dry and the seeds inside can rattle. Then you can do whatever you want with them; from there on it is a matter of choice and artistic creativity.

Just a quick FYI - I suspect they should be ready for Halloween in 2010 (not this season for sure).

But that's part of the fun of growing the gourds - you babysit them all summer long when they're growing and you babysit them all winter long while they're drying.

Hey, sounds like babies thru teenagers!!
