Lilac tree is it dying?

voltageJune 24, 2012

I live in Toronto, On. I have a 25 year old lilac tree which has given no problems. However the past 3 years I have noticed a decline in a few of the branches. Right now there is one large branch that is completly void of any green leaves. There is another large branch that just have a few green leaves very sparse. Than the third branch looks fine.

There is something that looks like green moss growning over all the branches.

Is it possible that the large branch void of anything green could come back next year? Or should I just remove that entire branch.

It looks like 1/3 the tree is dead the other 1/3 on its way out and the last 1/3 looks fine.

Not sure what to do?

Could be old age, could be ground based nasty of some sort.

I have lilacs here that are older and they are getting mushrooms growing on the base and dying off.

I cut one down and the middle of the trunk was rotted.
There may be treatments for it if you check with an arborist.

My lilacs act this way if they have scale. I use a systemic product and it works well on everything except euyonomous. I just can't win the fight when scale finds them. The pink lilacs seem to need extra water in my yard or they wilt and start to die, but I don't think that is your problem.
Mybe find more detailed infmation at a lilac sellers website.
Take some kind of action now, or you might lose the whole shrub.
