how can i keep small gourds from rotting?

karninaOctober 12, 2005

its the end of the gourds season here in israel and one of the vine decided to grow 2 new gourds at last..

they are pretty small and the rains are about to come..

is there a way to preserve these little ones?

maybe i can pick them and somehow dry them and use them for my crafts?

or maybe you think they might have a chance to survive the winter???

Hi Karnina. Isn't it annoying when the gourds set just at the end of the season? I have several small ones, too. However, I would guess that if they are meant to be large hard-shell gourds, they may have a hard time sucessfully getting past harvest. I suggest that you pick them when the vine appears dry (will that happen in a rainy climate?) and then put them somewhere quite cool and completely dry. You might try wiping them with a mild bleach solution to see if it helps to retard spoilage. Good luck, you never can tell with gourds quite how they will turn out. J
