What Grass for Zone 6 .... 3-6 feet +

jmcbackyarddigger(z6b So IL)October 20, 2008

I live in the extreme Lower Midwest (Zone 6b)....and I have a problem with a strip of yard (1 foot by 25 feet) that runs between a backyard fence and an asphalt drive.

This strip is a nuisance and I have tried irises, daylilies, sedums, roses.....but they just require too much care for this busy guy.....weeds and grasses between and around the plants being the major problem.

I want something that looks great and is virtually maintenance free. I've thought about ornamental grasses...WHY NOT!!! Afterall, it is grasses that are in and around the plants that play havoc with everything I've tried up to this point.

Any thoughts or specific recommendations? Where can I obtain these plants?

This is a tough one, because 1 ft is not a lot of planting width for a 6 ft tall grass. If height wasn't a concern, I'd recommend a small pennisetum or fescue grass.
