Cleaning hard shelled gourds

bluensilverNovember 13, 2007

I have snake gourds, birdhouse gourds, a kettle type gourd, some apple gourds, and some other weird shaped hard shelled gourds. After the vines died, I let them dry by hanging them up. They are mostly all dry now, and are covered in mold, like I read they would be. Now, how do I get the mold off of them effectively? Any advice would be great. Thanks.

I use a soft scrub brush and a 1:10 household bleach solution to clean mine. But make sure they are VERY well dried first - so dry that the seeds rattle inside and that you cannot mark the skin with a sharp fingernail. Usually takes mine 6 months minimum.

I would wait until spring to ensure they are completely dry, as digdirt says.
