Birding and Dining

goodhors(z5 MI)August 13, 2008

Just ate at the River Lake Inn near Colon MI. It was an extremely entertaining experience because of their unique garden setting and the wildlife it draws. Watching out the large windows we were able to see a MULTITUDE of Hummingbirds using the numerous feeders as we ate. None of us have ever seen as many gathered and so very close! They flitted in and all around outside the windows, easy to view up close.

The Inn has a beautiful pond and garden just past the feeders with a brick path. Lots of beautiful flowers, plantings to attract the birds and butterflies. They also have a number of other feeders for finches, woodpeckers, and bird houses for Martins, which are very viewable from the eating areas.

We had a very good meal, then walked the lovely paths around the Inn and grounds to see the insects and flowers out farther.

An extremely entertaining dinner, with the constant changing of birds hovering outside the glass. Both kids and adults were fascinated. They said that the Ruby Throated Hummingbird is the only one common in Michigan, but sometimes a lost Rufus will wander thru during migration times.

They are having a Hummingbird Festival on Sat. Aug 23. You can find the address and details on their website:

It is a local attraction near my mother, and we went for her birthday dinner. Sure worth the time and drive to visit.
