ornamental grass - Zone 7

shw104(7)December 25, 2006

Hello,

Fairly new to ornamental grasses and would like a few recommendations to what grows well in my area (outside of Baltimore).

I have a fairly sunny spot for them and am looking for a mixture of mid height (2'-4') and tall >5'. Actually recently moved 4-5 large pine trees from my yard and would like to use the grass on the property line between my house and my neighbors in this area.

Definitely want perennials and can start them from seed in a small growing rack I have in my basement. Don't have a large budget for this project.

Thanks for the assistance.

donn: Thanks... any advice on how to best grow them from seed? Did you start the plants indoors?

Thanks!

They were all started with winter sowing techniques, sowed in recyclable containers:

and plant bands in a cold frame

and placed outside, in winter, spring and summer. Very few of them actually need cold moist stratification, so most were sown in spring and summer.
