Butter Bean Question

DPYSRGJanuary 31, 2013

Growing up my mother cooked butter beans that were very very large. They look like the size of a silver dollar.sitting in the plate on top of the rice with the pieces of hamhock.

Can someonegive me a name of one of the Lima (butter beans) that grows well in Southern Louisiana that may match that bean size? I would prefer Pole size since I am limited on yard space.

The only one I know of that's really large is called Christmas. It's white with brown streaks, or speckles. But i isn't the size of a silver, dollar, I've never heard of one getting that large.

When you plant some, wait until it's getting consistently warm, like May, before putting the seed in the ground. They like it hot.

I would be interested in knowing of one that size that would set pods in hot weather
I have grown Christmas,King Of The Garden,White Christmas, North Star and some of the other large limas and find they do not produce as well as the butterbean types in hot weather

I can attest to the fact about waiting til it's consistently warm to plant the butter beans. With our late spring this year I had to plant my beans 4 times before they would even sprout... and I'm still waiting to pick my first full bean pod. My snap beans loved the cooler weather though and they're just about done producing now.
