moving helleborus

Annette HolbrookMarch 12, 2005

I have a small patch (about 2' x2') of helleborus that is being overshadowed and covered up by a daphne. I would like to move the helleborus across the path and was wondering if now was a good time to do this? Any tips?

Hi Annette,

Are your hellebores currently in bloom? For smaller plants that aren't of blooming age now is an ideal time for moving in your climate. I typically transplant most of mine during this time of year. For blooming plants, it may be easier to let them bloom, then cut back the flower stalks before moving. You can also transplant at any other time of year (late August-September would also be a very good time for you), except the middle of winter or in heat of mid summer would not be ideal.
The main thing to remember is that they have large and deep root systems. Try to consider this when you dig; otherwise treat them like any other perennial.
