Herbs for shade

treetoronto3January 7, 2014

Hello, I have a NE wall which gets little (almost no) sun. Are there any herbs I could plant against it that would grow.

Obviously they wont grow as well as in full sun, but something that would grow.

Any suggestions?

Mints, chives, comfrey, horseradish and parsley can cope with some shade and also like a bit of moisture.

Lovage can take some shade too.

Now medicinal herbs...there are boatloads for shade/woodland gardens but they are not items for kitchen use.

In the light of what FataMorgana said, I'd emphasise that Comfrey is not for the kitchen either. I use mine for the compost heap or directly onto the soil.

Basically, cool crops can tolerate less sun/more shade and those are: Anything in the onions family ; Parsley ; Cilantro. In that order I would say also sage and rosemary to some extent.
