what is ment by heirloom?

Im new and i hear bout heirloom all the time what is it? Are the better please explain.

An heirloom is an open-pollinated plant regarded as being continually cultivated for 50 yrs. or more in a location.

The 'location' being a country, county, city, or your own backyard. So.. you can have a non-hybrid plant that does not qualify as an heirloom, but ALL heirlooms are open-pollinated, i.e. (not an intentional cross-pollinated hybrid).
