I don't think there is any problem except growing it from seed. The seeds take a long time to germinate if they germinate at all. Same growing conditions of ginger. I grow lots of varieties of ginger and one of turmeric,

I did get some elettaria. Ordered in from California, lol. I also grow a few gingers and turmerics. Also a few ornamentals. One or two etlingera ( torch ginger), alpine ( jungle king, etc.)--mostly, I grow the ornamentals for my mom. The edible ones are for me. Have been thinking of getting the white ginger, milky way. What gingers do you grow?--Or turmerics.

If you want seeds, try your local health food store. Many carry herbs and spices in bulk, including whole cardamom pods. I've grown a number of plants using seeds from HFS, so it appears they don't do anything to keep the seeds from germinating.
