only afternoon sun ok?

rhubarb_stalker(Z5b Western MA)April 17, 2009

I am considering putting a herb garden on the western side of the house which is very close to my kitchen. My list of herbs: parsley, chives, garlic chives, sage, thyme, tarragon, oregano, horehound, lemon balm, spearmint, and chocolate mint.

I know a southern exposure would be better, but can I get by with afternoon sun only? The reason I am steering towards the western exposure is that I would like to be able to step out the door and snip herbs that are close by.

How much sun, in hours and time? Most will be fine in partial sun of more than about 5 hours. For tarragon, its not seeds but from tooted cuttings. Garlic chives come up every year as do thyme, mint, and oregano.

I had basil and sage a couple of years ago, getting full sun from about 12pm to sunset, and the sage and basil were spindly, They didn't flourish in the windowbox at all. If you are considering any mint, keep them in pots only, as they are prolific and will take over the yard. They are also hard to get rid of afterwards. But I think the mint will do fine, as I have some on the side of the yard that get a couple of hours of sun, and they just WON'T die, coming back every year.

The area gets sun from about 12N to sunset.

The mint has always been kept in pots.

I grow basil, but I plant it in full sun in the veggie garden.

Thanks for your comments.
