Pictures of some of Hawai'i's Malvaceae

Cyanea(z11 HI)May 21, 2006

I just payed a visit to Amy B. Greenwell botanical Garden on the Big Island of Hawaii. All pictures except the A. menziesii are from there. the A. menziesii is from my yard. Islands in parenthesis next to plant names are where the species is endemic to.

Hibiscus waimeae (Kaua'i)

Kokia drynarioides (Big Island) - endemic Hawaiian genus

Kokia cookei (Moloka'i). This species exists as grafts using K. drynarioides rootstocks. Seeds are not viable. This flower is a little aged.

Kokia cookei

Abutilon sandwicensis (O'ahu).

As elsewhere the natives can be more interesting and remarkeable than the common popular imports that dominate the settled landscape but few know them.

Hi, those are great pictures. I'm on Maui, new to Abutilon. How can I get starts (I'm not sure there are seeds?) to the menziesii? I've found some plants in the wild. At the time I found them there was no flowers. My question right now would be are there any laws I would violate by taking a flower? I'm doing some endemic botany illustations.

I just found Hibiscadelphus are protected as they are so rare (in the wild only).
