hardy hibiscus for full PHX sun

cmt909May 3, 2007

are there any varieties that will take a Phx summer in full sun w/potential for radiated heat from a close cinderblock wall? I have several varieties and the darker leaf hibiscus (usually red) seem to do better but all are in containers and want to put some in the ground in our south facing backyard. Any pointers is helpful.

thanks

The red singles are some of the most vigorous types and so will hold up to temps and other conditions better. All tropical hibiscus want to have good drink so mulch in a dry climate will be important to help even moisture levels. Other colors may be hardy enough to work but the single standard red would be the best one to count on for dependable performance. Brilliant is a common variety that is widely available at home depots and other big box stores this time of year. If the ground is sandy add organic matter (compost:)to help store water and nutrients.
