I think this is some kind of Protea. Could someone please help me narrow it down?

My mother is about to leave for a trip to Hawaii and a friend asked her to find out what the plant is. She is afraid she will spend her whole time hunting down the plant name!

I have never seen anything like it, but a google search with "fringed bracts" took me to Protea, and the neriifolia looked the closest, but not exactly. Does anyone here know, and is it native to Hawaii?

Thanks so much!

It definitely looks like a protea to me, but I couldn't tell you what kind. They are not native to Hawaii--they're from South Africa, I think.

Thanks, Steiconi! I've also had suggestions of P. neriifolia or P. laurifolia.
