Carnivorous Plant

randg(11)October 4, 2009

My very first Venus Flytrap I bought from Lowes last year ended in failure--I repotted it in a regular potting soil and watering it with tap water, it died within days.

Few weeks ago, I have another opportunity to buy it again, this time knowing what media and water to use. Out of the three small pots I bought at Lowes, one is thriving. It does seems like a pet, lol. As I type this message, I have cleaned my buckets and placed it outside few minutes ago to catch the rain, I'm smiling and listening to the raindrops because it's finally the beginning of the rainy season!

While researching about carnivorous plants, I learned that we have one indigenous carnivorous plant in Hawaii. Anyone know where to buy other carnivorous plants in Oahu, like the sun-dews and pitcher plants? I know that there is online store out there, but I tend to stay away from those. If anyone sees other carnivorous plants in Lowes, Home Depot, etc...please tell us!

Nepenthes are sold at Rainforest, a flower shop in the small shopping center in the mauka part of Kapahulu on the corner of Kapahulu Ave., and Kihei Place. The owner is an avid Nepenthes grower and collector. You might say he's a fanatic. He takes a few plants to his shop about once a week to sell (cash only). They are not the common mass produced commercially grown test tube plants, but the more unusual seed-grown hybrids and species. He gets sold out quickly sometimes, so call first.
