Getting rid of...

We've finally decided to take control of our wild hillside. It is covered with that low evergreen that spreads...some kind of yew?...and renegade ferns. Any suggestions for the most efficient way to rid ourselves of both? Roundup on the roots? Or is there something better? Thanks so much for your help.

before you "slash and burn", do you know what your going to replace the evergreen and ferns with? Because you'll need to have something in place to hold the soil. It could be an errosion fence or even weed barrier if you don't have plants yet but it should be something.

Round up doesn't have to be put on the roots. It is sprayed on the foliage and will filter down to the roots. The plant should start turning brown within a week, if not reapply.
