At what slope does one need to terrace?

Trying to figure out if I can get away with not terracing my back-yard and still have a good veggie garden. You can't tell very well by the picture, but a few feet down from the existing garden, the yard starts to slope slightly downward.

That looks like a gentle slope. I wouldn't terrace it.

cut your rows along the contour lines of the slope, not in a straight line. That way each row will be level and hold water.

Wikipedia contour plowing.
