hibiscus borer?

mrtulinJune 8, 2008

My Kopper King lived about 5 good years, but did not survive this New England winter. I noticed fine sawdust around the base of the woody stem, and see holes bored into them (top/cut edge) I've never heard of a borer, and do they kill live plants or just bore into dead wood- presumeably to lay eggs?

Thanks
