Tropical Hibiscus crossed w/ Rose of Sharyn

Lou89(z8 VA)July 25, 2005

Does this combination work? I pollenated the two both ways. The hibiscus seed pod has already formed but no seeds or they are really small. In fact none of the hibiscuses we own ever produce "true" seed pods. The crossed flower on the rose of Sharon has not finished yet but is close to being ready to take off, but I do not see a seed pod forming on it yet either. Do some varities of Hibiscus and Rose of Sharon not produce seeds at all? Or is it impossible to cross these two species of Hibiscus?

It's possible to cross some species, however these 2 species are not compatible. With both species, there are some that are sterile, some that are better pollen producers, some that are better seed producers etc. - starts to happen when you have so many culitvars.

Many H. syriacus are self sterile, so apparently you have a cultivar that isn't.
