What 'Rose of Sharon' Type Hibiscus Do You Recommend?

jmcdmdAugust 11, 2005

I was thumbing through a Springhill Nursery catalog, and I saw four different Rose of Sharon hibiscus plants offered. (The older I get the more I am appreciating these seemingly reliable plants that thrive in yards throughout my community located in Zone 6b.)

Springhill's offerings include: "Freedom," "Blue Bird," "Aphrodite," and "Helene." Based on pictures only, I have to say that my choice would be "Aphrodite." But I'm anxious to hear what you all have to say.

There are probably other similar offerings out there that might even be better. And I am sure there are other sources besides Spring Hill.

I look forward to hearing from all of you out there in the forum.

Thanks.

I'd recommend one of the sterile types that doesn't drop seed. I don't know for sure if any of those are sterile. The best way to find out would be to ask a nursery. One ROS that I know for sure is sterile is Lavender Chiffon, which has beautiful double flowers. I've heard bad things about Spring Hill, so if it were me, I'd buy from a local nursery rather than them.

Try Bluestone Perennials. Throw Spring Hill catalog away.
