Establishing Timothy hay
I have a little plot of Timothy growing on soil that I had brought in to cover an area of compacted sand/gravel. The soil is about 4" thick, but I understand that Timothy is pretty shallow rooted. The soil has a fair bit of clay in it, and I've been ammending with compost and other OM as available. The Timothy was frost seeded and rolled. Some was planted with mixed clovers, some not. Fertilized with organics (bunny poop, alfalfa meal- just to get it established). We've been getting lots of rain- it looks like I got great % germination (pretty heavily seeded). The area doesn't get full sun all day- but I have had Timothy spring up in clumps in that area and do pretty well, and my veggie garden does well there.
My question is about what to expect in the first year. I would anticipate a reduced crop. I really don't need a big harvest, but would like to judge the health of the stand later on. Will I get 2 cuttings or 1? Any idea on when I could be harvesting (maybe mid-late summer?)?
It's in the 4-6" range right now and lush green.
Thanks for entertaining silly questions- I'm basically winging it here :)
