Winterizing new Hardy Hibiscus

mary_anne55September 21, 2008

I planted a Hardy Hibiscus in mid-July. It seems to be doing well, at this point. I lost the one I planted last year, so I need to know what type of protection it needs to survive a Southern Ontario winter. It is facing south against a fence. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mary Anne

Hi Mary Anne,If it comes to dinner-plate bloom size Hardy Hibiscus Rose Mallow,(I put at least 6"of dry leaves layer mulch around the trunk.
If it comes to Hibiscus Syriacus'Rose of Sharon'I do the same plus I put four stakes in the ground around the shrub and wrap a burlap around them, and I have a fabric screen to protect the shrub from freezing cold wind.
this is what I do sucsesfully for many years.
I hope it will help.
Good luck
Hala.
