Basil Dilemma

I planted genovese basil from seed a couple of months and I harvested it a few times to make pesto. I remember it being really really good. Then all of a sudden I made it and it started tasting of licorice. I was wondering if this was a normal thing too happen. Keep in mind I do have thai basil in another container. Is there a chance that having that nearby has influenced the flavor of this basil?

I also seem to remember this same thing happening to me when I planted last years basil.

I thought all basil tastes like licorice! What am I missing? :P

Taste is a subjective thing. Plus, there are many different basils with slightly different flavor. I ususaly have more than one kind. This year I have Italian and thai so far.

Another thing possibly is that basill'f flavor can change by age and growing condition(amount of sun, water..)

i have Thia and sweet.
they taste very different.
(the flower tops on the Thia are an amazing taste!)

amount of water/sun and minerals all affect taste.
make sure they get nutrients, fish emulsion or a fert with micros might help
