Herbs and high sulfur content water

tfwbjAugust 12, 2008

I have had someone ask me if high sulfur content water from their well will hurt herb plants. I have never had to deal with this situation and would appreciate any help.

Hahaha! Sorry. I had to laugh. I grew up in a town that has so much sulfur in the water that a sanitarium grew out of the "sulfur cure" more than 100 years ago. During the summer months we would water as needed the various outdoor vegetables and other garden plants with our sulfur-ladened water - and it was *very* high in sulfur. The plants did fine. They definitely enjoyed rain water best but that seems to be true no matter if you have city or well water.

My current well-water has a number of minerals including sulfur. Nothing like the water at my parent's house but there is still a sulfur content. I water all sorts of plants with it.

So in short, no, it shouldn't harm most plants.
