Thai Basil seedlings. When to start pinching?

a_shau(San Francisco 8b)September 18, 2013

Hi - I started these guys from seed and am happy that they seem to be doing well. They are about 3-4 inches tall and all have a decent of leaves. I think they have true leaves. I'd love to cultivate them to be bushy, and have read that to do this they need to be pruned.

My question is, when do I start pruning? Are they too young right now?

Also, they are looking a little bit leggy; should I just put some more soil in there to help stabilize them a bit, now that they've got some healthy growth?

NO, do not pinch them. They are too small to be pinched. You would do it when they have 3 times as much leaf pairs/nodes. Then you would pinch the top one third.

Your pot is enough with 2 plants.
Pinch is not much need.

Thank you! Yes I realize it's crowded now; I do plan to transfer them later when they grow bigger.

I dont know your climate, other than zone 8b. But basil loves warm weather. This means, in most places where you anticipate a frost, some time in November or earlier, and right now it is getting cooler, Then your basils won't have a chance to grow much, and get bushy. So then, it is ok just to leave them where they are and let them grow as clumps.

BUT if you are somewhere in Florida or California that there won't be a frost and it wont get much colder, then you can separate and re pot them.
