stopping spread of garlic chives?

flowerpower68(5)September 5, 2013

I had 4 large sections of garlic chives and thought they spread by bulb multiplication. I've learned they also multiply by seed and I now have them everywhere. Any easy way to cut the heads off? I thought about taking the weed eater to the tops but would they still reseed if I did that while they are still white? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Use a pair of hand pruners, snip the flowers off, and throw them away or compost them if the seeds in the flower head haven't started developing. Then pull up as many volunteer plants as you can.

Personally, I like the look of garlic chives. I just cut the flowers off as soon as they fade so they don't become a nuisance.

I second Rodney's comment. Hand pruners are easiest. Clip them towards the base of the plant once flowers BEGIN to fade.

I like to eat the flowers. Tastiest part of the garlic chive in my opinion.
