Basil leaves all curl upward- what's wrong?

spinner1020October 5, 2008

For several years now, my basil plants start out fine, but as the season goes along, the leaves curl upwards on both sides and are no longer soft and dark green, but kind of harder and with more of a yellowish cast to them. This is true even though I have changed the location 5 times, including this year growing them in raised beds along with my tomatoes. I have tied unsucessfully to search the internet for an answer and was wondering if anyone here can help me out?

Have you done a soil test? It sounds like some sort of deficiency to me...could be a trace mineral that isn't in your soil at all?

Just replant more often and let those go to seed. You want fresh sweet leaves anyway.

I have had the same problem. Interestingly enough, these plants went to seed and now I have new basil plants all around. But the new plants are quite nice and healthy with big fat green lush leaves. Go figure, their mama plant was a runt but they got the better genes. I'm hoping to take my young plants into my greenhouse for the winter, and will hope for them to keep growing, so I can have fresh basil all winter. Will have to research the do's and dont's on this.
