Deep Shade/ Shade plants for border?

jenniferinfl(9B Florida)August 9, 2012

The east side of my house is heavily shaded by a large tree which is approximately 30 feet away. Shade plants really aren't my thing generally, so I think I'll plant something my husband likes. He's from Canada and so is still quite enamored with all things tropical.

Any ideas for tropical plants that can handle that much shade? Maybe some bromeliads?

Ooh, I like the variegated one, added to my list then. I know those grow well, my dad has the regular one all over his yard. Funny thing, it doesn't grow where he wants it because he keeps it raked to dirt, no organic matter added, but then he digs up and throws out the dead ones in his compost pile. So, yeah, every compost pile he's started is just covered in these.. lol Not really wild about the plain ones, probably because I grew up seeing them every day, but I like the variegated ones.

Calatheas are my favorite. This one, Calathea Zebrina, is hardy in 9B.

Ooh, I like both the pink polka dot plant and the calathea zebrina.

I have some Draeceana(?) that I was told were houseplants that I bought on clearance at Lowe's, now I wonder if those are hardy enough for that spot too.
