New Challenge: It's an About FACE!

hostanistaFebruary 18, 2014

Name a hosta and most people on this forum can picture exactly what it looks like.

Name a MEMBER of this forum however and well...... aren't you curious to put a FACE to the NAME?! Let's FACE it, I can't even tell if some of you are boys or girls!

Now that the Hosta Alphabet is over, and before the 2014 Hosta season gets into full swing, how about some FACE-to-FACE time? Take a selfie right now!

What fun to see all these pictures. We are an attractive, varied and wonderful group. Everyone looks friendly and earthy. Some look as I expected, Ken and Phil because I already knew what they looked like. I expected Steve to be smart and it looks like he is. Hostanista I love the one of you in your garden. Paula, what is that interesting machine you are standing in front of? Mountain Man could be a poster child for a 'Mountain Man'. I have to say Faye's is misleading. The idea of her resting makes me laugh. She's on the go all the time. On the other hand I take the afternoon off during the summer and lounge by the pool with a book (2nd picture). Since I'm always at the other end of the camera there are mercifully few pictures of me. The first picture was taken at a wedding this summer with my grandson.

I have to say my biggest surprise so far is Ludi-Ludisia. I thought the name went with a middle aged woman not a handsome young man!

PS - Don's first picture what hilarious. I was prepared to post a picture of Tina Turner for mine. Unfortunately there's not much similarity.

Sandy, I so enjoyed reading your column! My impulse was to copy it and insert it here immediately, but I suspect that like myself, everyone will read it for themselves.

Having said that, one of the parts I especially related to ...."WeâÂÂve seen gardening change over the years, too, with pesticides being banned left and right as we learn more about the cumulative effects of chemicals on our planet and on the lives with which we must co-exist, that make our own continuance on Earth possible."

Great article ... and it's so nice to meet you, Sandy! :-)

I had a loss of my photos, if you recall the external harddrive self destructed. So I hacked into my DH's computer to get a couple of real nice photos. I'd forgotten that I'd loaded some for his screensaver slideshow. I think both pictures were edited with Virtual Painter V software, because I like how it turned bad pics into pretty paintings.

This changed the color somewhat, because that is a white turtleneck, and my hair is white as well. Then, DH is shown in all his glory working in the garden with a waterhose. Now do you understand why I simply MUST have an OUTDOOR SHOWER?

That was me. I had a layover between Indonesia and Taiwan for 3 1/2 days so I hopped over to Bali (Indonesia too, but very different from Java).. The greatest side trip I ever took and..........

.......in front of the Forbidden City in Beijing and....

.....climbing the Great Wall at Bataling...Chairman Mao said 'You are not a true hero until you climb the Great Wall at Bataling.' I showed him. Wide enough for 4 horses. This is the steep side which only foreigners climb. There is a 'gentler' side which my Chinese friend told me the Chinese climb and visiting politicians. Many people climbing are very old and I was told many die of heart attacks each year fulfilling their lifelong dreams. Judging by a few of the people on the way up, I believe it. Well, if you have to go it would be nice doing something you dreamed of.

Great to "see" everyone here. People from all walks of life and parts of the world. We've got cat people, fisher people, a snake lover, bird trainer and maybe even a few norms. All with one thing in common, a love of gardening and hostas. I think pretty exciting and cool.

I think many of us may have other things in common as well. I've got to tell moccassinlanding that I was also a stoned head once, been a biker most of my life, even owned a couple birds over the years. I also lived in Alabama for a couple years. Still love my motorcycle and try to balance it with my gardening, it's tough as both are prime at the same time of year.

Thanks Hostanista for starting this and thanks everyone for showing up.

Old Dirt, I can see you riding home on your Hog with Empress Wu perched on the buddy seat. Somebody PHOTOSHOP THAT!

And JonnyB, I always have thought you were Ian Fleming, creator of J.Bond and Britain's top Walter Middy impersonator. You got the style, bud.

DonB, thank you for the Charlie's Angels ref (guess I put Pharoah's Fawcett on my list now)....I was twice the age of those young ladies, nurses they were, a good thing in case I should be overwhelmed by activities over-the-top for a staid librarian. In this life to be happy you live up to your own expectations, not those other folks have for you. Am I right?

Tomorrow is Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, before Ash Wednesday. A good day for mingling with a few thousand friends in the heart of downtown Mobile, even though it will be slightly wet no damper on cheerful camaraderie. I think you guys would enjoy the occasion. It terminates two weeks of parades and formal balls, and motor homes parked like cordwood beneath the Interstate overpasses....

Now who next to join the FACE challenge?

I say Renae is great because she has allowed me to grow my habit to over 500 hosta and continues to support me even after I say I'm not going to buy any more and then she receives the credit card bill with more hosta purchases! ZKathy, thanks for letting me know!!! I went to the bank driveup and they were closed, so thought it must be today....anyway, I was working in the hosta garden most of the day, really very springlike. Now my muskles need some spinach, they are so tired.

Gee, the neighbors next door were all partying...hmmmm.

Dave,
No ones going to off us for growing hostas, just sell us stuff. Some facial recognition program will eventually make a list of who the hosta wackos are and our mailboxes will fill up with offers for voleblock and deer repellant.

Scott McNealy, former CEO of Sun Microsystems said, "You have zero privacy anyway. Get over it."

Nonetheless I am a privacy freak, but I doubt it does any good.

One of my favorite expressions (and I have quite a few) is:

JUST BECAUSE I'M PARANOID DOESN'T MEAN THEY ARE NOT OUT TO GET ME.

Truly you are right. It is like a colony of ants living in an aquarium ant farm kept by some kid doing a science project. In China they are designing whole cities shaped like rhinos or dragons, etc, and who cares about NAMES....they know where you live, and that's good enough an identification. We are all coordinates on a map.

Like Google Earth can have us zoom in closer and closer on map details, "they" can zoom in on people, activities. I don't know if individuals at a Super Bowl could be identified without being tracked there, but it would be an interesting experiment. An invisibility shield up to keep the drone out of view...or maybe the camera and transmitter inside the blimp circling the stadium, or on the cell towers located in the city....it just really makes me think twice when Sears or JCP knows my exact location when I am on the road between two stores and they tell me how many miles to each one. Freaky!

Like Pogo Possum said, "We have met the enemy, and it is us." I'd capitalize that "us" only some might think I meant "USA."

Do you ever get the feeling we are not in Kansas anymore?
:) So far newborns are not outfitted with microchips at birth, so I guess that is a plus. Some really interesting novels written on utopias and dystopias.

I've never been here before but was intrigued by the subject so I had to take a look. You all sound/look so nice, I'll have to come back. When I moved in to my house, the people before me had planted a border of hosta near the front walk and a bunch in the back side yard. I don't know much about hosta except there's about a million kinds. Just for the hosta it, I'll add my pic, too. I hope you don't mind.

Great to see new and YOUNG faces on here. That means the future of hosta is alive and well and living all over the place. Maybe when I take a break from shooting hosta pictures, I can focus on a selfie that is not of my white clogs (I have 3 pair of them which I wash regularly, BTW).

I'm told that the Civil War photographer Matthew Brady put a pair of shoes in the foreground of his photos for scale, and as an ID.....so if you see clogs, I'm pulling a Brady on you. :)

I'm not usually one for selfies either. I had to get this one from hubby's phone.

So what you get here is a pic of me and my big explanation for suddenly going MIA from the hosta forum last year.

Our family of 3 became a family of 4 last August thru adoption. We had been waiting over 2 years when we finally connected with a birthmom who chose us to parent her baby. So, last summer was filled with fewer shovels and lots of trips to the doc with birthmom.

I'm the one on the right and our 8 month old daughter is on the left.

Babka, the picture in question was uploaded to the old Gardenweb server and for some reason it doesn't show up in the thread. It's not in my Photobucket album and I cannot edit my original posting to insert it, what a shame. I won't bother making an addition on the current bottom of this thread as comments were made that are now totally out of place and context.

With the limitations we have with respect to picture sizes and having to upload them to the Houzz server for them to be displayed rather than being able to use either Flickr or Photobucket I can see myself posting virtually no more pictures on here and just limit myself to an occasional comment, I'll swing most of my activities back to Hallson's.

Babka, as I said in another post:

What people like Myrle and myself have been harping about is the resolution Houzz downsizes to, in a word, sucks. While using the above guidelines to copy and paste the Flickr/Photobucket url into the Houzz photo upload will result in a displayed image, it's still that shitty resolution and does NOT link to the original you have in your Flickr/Photobucket albums where you could look at that image in a much higher resolution and make out much more detail when viewed at that higher resolution.

I don't have Flickr or Photobucket so maybe I'm missing something, but the images I see in the threads appear perfectly clear to me. Are you still having a problem? Is not the camaraderie here sufficient to compel you to overlook a bit of lost resolution? I sincerely hope it is because I enjoy your posts and photos, which continue to be just beautiful.

You bet I'm still having an issue with this. I'm a detail kind of guy, I've been involved in photography for most of my adult life and I know a thing or two about resolution.

Let's try an experiment, I'll post a picture off my Photobucket account as an embedded image through Houzz at a reduced size, which you see above, and I'll post a link to my PB account to the same picture and you tell me whether or not you see any differences.

Now I see what some of you more advanced photographers are talking about. The PB direct link is a lot crisper. It does show up a bit smaller on my screen, but, yes, more detail on that one as compared to the one on this page.

Clearly the PB linked pic is clearer and not because it's larger. Use the leaf at 5 o'clock and click back and forth for the obvious difference.

Say no more folks, if you care about detail in the pictures you post than Houzz is NOT the place to be.

I'm with you Pieter. Your example was very clear and to the point. The reduced quality of our pictures is a deal breaker for me. I am still waiting for an update from nearly a week ago when I asked a direct question of Houzz. I wanted to know if they are going to fix this or just let it slide by. The answer from Tamarra was:

"TamaraHi Myrtle! Being able to view larger pictures is in the works. Stay tuned!"

I'm still checking every so often but am fast losing hope. Myrle

Bigger doesn't necessarily equal better resolution, does it?

Your point is well taken, it all depends on what you start out with. Start off with a hi-res picture, as all of mine are, and each and every time you reduce the size of the picture you loose detail when you compare it with what you started out with. Every time you reduce the size of a picture you loose detail. Period. Start off with a small picture and enlarge it you'll get a larger picture without any more detail, in spite of what you see being portrayed on TV shows you cannot add detail.
