New to Hoyas

sunnysa(8)March 13, 2014

I just found out that I have a Hoya. I have to admit that I know nothing about them except that I have had one for years and didn't know what it was. It's always been that pretty vine in the corner that I would forget to water. The good folks on Name that Plant named it for me. Since then, from what I've read about them, I'm loving it. Being new to Hoyas, I would appreciate any and all advice. I have two ordered online and can't wait to see them come in the mail.

I'm not sure what kind of Hoya I have. I haven't been gardening for too long.

I've ordered a Carnosa, Krimson Princess, and a Carnosa Golden, Tri-Color. I hope these are easy to grow.

Hi,

I helped her over at Name that Plant & invited her over here. She has a Pubicalyx of some kind, large & quite healthy.

Hi Pirate Girl, Thanks for your help in identifying my Hoya. It was received as a cutting and for years it barely grew. But then, we put it outside and it really took off. I looking online for more Hoyas. I found two Carnosas online, one from Almost Eden and one from Gardinos, but, it appears that I may have ordered the same exact plant. Dummy, me.... I wanted two different ones, lol.

But, I was also hoping to learn where is the best place to order online? Thanks.

Sunnysa, here is a list of US vendors' websites I know of in no particular order:

http://www.kartuz.com/

https://www.glasshouseworks.com/succulents/succulents-h-j#hoyas

http://srqhoyas.com/CUTTINGS/BUNDLES: this is an inexpensive way to start or continue a collection. Buy random bundles of cuttings at a discount. Or you can buy named cuttings from her (Joni) at higher prices. Joni will restart selling later this month after a move.

Welcome to Hoyas, sunny. Most people here can personally identify with your experience of having grown a Hoya for many years as an anonymous houseplant.

You should have no problems with your new Hoyas, which are all varieties of Hoya carnosa. It's as tough or even tougher than your good buddy Hoya publicalyx.

Thanks for the welcome. It really was a nice surprise to learn about Hoyas. I wish now that I had taken better care of my 'buddy.' It's been left out in the Winter and it's not doing so good right now. I could kick myself for not taking into the shed with the plumerias. It had attached itself to the wall and I thought it would be okay there. I hated to cut it back.

Aw, I'm sorry to hear about that. It might help you to read Joni's post, this time last year, concerning some cold damage affecting her Hoyas. SRQ Hoyas: Hoyas Feel Effects of 45 degree temperatures

Thanks for the link. I sure hope buddy picks up. We've had such an unpredictable winter.... freezing temps one day and 80 degrees the next. It did that all winter long. I'm not giving up on it just yet.
