Leaves sprouting from flower stalk?

StatueladySeptember 26, 2012

Can anyone tell me how common it is for leaves to sprout from old flower stalks as shown in this picture? Is it genetic or caused by the environment? I don't recall seeing this on this daylily or any other before.

Lucky you! Those are proliferations. You can grow those to produce even more daylilies. A quick google search can show you how to do that. Candy

Proliferations. I like that term. Thanks for the information, Candy. I figured they were splitable kind of like a spider plant but had never seen them before.

If I find them when in bloom,I try to set a pod on the scape
This will keep the prolif growing and maturing as long as the scape is green
I air layer the profif on expensive cultivars after setting pods.
Some growers use Dap paste to cause prolifs
