Good beet variety?

writersblockSeptember 7, 2011

Can anyone recommend a good beet variety for FL, preferably a yellow beet? Anyone have any experience with Golden Detroit? (Stuart/Ft. Pierce coastal area)

Hi Writersblock

I grew different beet varieties being one of my favorites Bulls Blood, for an early variety I like Kestrel, I also like the yellow varieties and Chiogga but they are not too productive in my experience. Past season I grew Betabel Golden and Specialty Golden. The most important thing to grow beets in our areas are to wait till is cool and that the soil is deep and loose, well amended.

Here are some that I grew past season

Those are really, really tasty looking, Sylvia. I just might, maybe, could be, am thinking about, eating a beet, something that has, in 63 years, never passed my lips. New times require new thinking.

But okra is still a no.

Hi Bill- Maybe you did not try a good quality beet or properly prepared. I make a beet and potato salad that everybody likes and my favorite are pickled beets to be used later in salads. You should give it a try.:)

Nice tender, young green okra. Sliced length-wise, salted. Yummy.
