Pine bark under fruit trees?

floridajane(Bonita Springs z10)October 16, 2011

I love using pine bark for covering over large areas, but before I go crazy on my back yard spaces, I thought I would ask if there is any reason to avoid putting pine bark under fruit trees? I worry that the acid levels in the pine will throw off the balance of the fruit trees.

Would love to hear what you all think!

I understand that trees don't mind a bit more acidity than herbaceous plants & veggies - & it shouldn't be to difficult to check on that. What kinds of fruit trees are they?

The important rule is not to pile mulch (&/or soil) up against the trunk of any tree, as this can lead to disease.

Fantastic. Thanks for that. I feel a bit better doing this with a second opinion!
