What plants do Annas Feed on in Jan-May in Nipomo California?

susansez2luvMarch 12, 2007

Hi,

I live in Nipomo california. We have tons of Anna's Hummingbirds here that do not migrate, but they disappear from Jan to May every year to breed. I'm sure they are following their food source. Does anyone know what they are eating during this time so I can plant it and keep them here during the breeding season.

Thanks

Miss my hummers.

Hi, we're a little farther north from you in Washington state, but some of our first flowering hummingbird plants of the spring are red currant and flowering quince, which are in full bloom right now. The Annas over winter in our area. Kathy

Is there anyone local to the central coast of Ca. that has any nesting Anna's right now? What plants do them seem to be feeding on?

I am not sure if these people are in your area of Ca. but they both have nesting Anna's right now "First Nest of the Season" by Alan and "Video of Judy Feeding her Young" by Kristin

Susan, I think that they eat lots of bugs when they are feeding young, but I have seen then on Golden Currant right now, because she's still brooding.Alan.

Thanks Penny, I thought that I'd driven past that quite a few times, I once saw a Red Headed Woopecker near there, of all places.
