Hummingbirds and flowering quince?

OnMillPondApril 24, 2013

It is a maxim in Rhode Island that Eastern Oreoles arrive when the quince is flowering. I have a very red flowering quince. It is in a place that is not observable from the house, so I wonder if hummingbirds like it, too.

Over here in Ca I always notice hummingbirds visiting the quince when it flowers, there's not much else blooming at that time of year so I think it's an important winter/early spring nectar source for them.

They fight over it here. In fact, that's one of the only reasons it's still here! It's too close to my flower beds and I'm constantly fighting suckers from it all season. I was seriously considering planting a honeysuckle into it to strangle it in an attempt to rid myself of it when the hummers arrived last year...and knowing it was about all that was flowering, I resigned myself to snipping and digging every growing season. It is pretty when it's flowering...I just wish it was better behaved! Mine is also a red one.
