North Idaho Humming birds

apermann(z6 ID)April 28, 2008

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the North Idaho Hummingbirds and what attracts them. I have a flower bed that I am renovating and would like to add flowers that they would like. We have quite a few in our nieghborhood and I would like to keep them here.

Thanks in advance

In Northern Idaho, I would imagine that you would or should get at least Calliope and Rufous Hummingbirds. In my garden in eastern WA, the plants I have they find most attractive are:

Salvia pensetmonoides
Agastache cana
Agastache 'Acupulco Salmon and Pink'
Crocosmia 'Lucifer'
Penstemon barbatus
Bee Balm (Monarda)
Red Hot Poker (Tritoma)
Salvia 'Maraschino' (bush salvia)

Hope this helps. Of course, many of these plants are xeric, meaning tolerate dry temperatures and drought. Depending on your climate, some of these plants may not do well for you.
