I bought a feeder, need assist for location and height?

ladyrose65April 2, 2013

Hello, I bought my first hummingbird feeder, its "Blue Bonting" 6 feeding ports. It's still cold here. When, where and what height do I place the feeder.

Hummingbird sighting are rare for us! Any suggestions and website links are most welcome.

Here is a link to a map for hummingbird migration. You can track the days until they come. I would hang the feeder at least three feet and in a shady spot to keep the nectar fresh. You can adjust though. They feed at flowers much lower. Good luck ladyrose56:)

I hang mine from the eaves of my house, along with hanging baskets. About 5' high. But they don't have to be that high, I saw one feeding on an asclepias that was maybe 2' tall the other day.

Hummers will find the feeder. Put it where it will be most enjoyable for you to observe. Better yet - more than one feeder in different spots.

Thanks for your advice, however, I got some mean squirrels. They like to attack the birds in the bird feeders! I don't want them near the humming bird feeder.

I have a good shaded area that is far from them.

Thank you for the links!

Squirrels and birds compete for the seeds in bird feeders. I've never seen a squirrel sucking on a hummingbird feeder. They'll be safe.

I have read stories of squirrels using hummingbird feeders. Just use a baffle.

I think it can go almost anywhere but the most important thing to me is that it's in a good place to view the hummers!!! I have mine on a shepherds hook right at the edge of the patio so I can see it both when I am sitting outside and also view it through the window when I am inside!

I have one out front too that I can view through my kitchen window...they both get used
