These beauties are blooming all over town and I have admired a strand for some time. This plant gets tall as you can see, growing taller than adjacent homes.
Common name is Mexican Sunflower.
It's tithonia diversifolia. Common names are Mexican sunflower (as trini1 suggested) or tree marigold.
Thank you trini1 and juneroses. While you're here, I saw this blooming on the roadside in West Tampa the other day and I've never seen anything quite like this.
It is a ginger. There are many that start off looking like this. Easy to grow. :o)
Thanks Katkin, I had no idea there were so many types of ginger. Heck, I even found out that a beautiful little plant I have by my entryway is a ginger, Siam Tulip.
The one in the picture looks like a pine cone ginger.
I have something called 'Spiral ginger' that looks exactly like the 2nd pic - it's incredibly vigorous & rather tall. If you leave a piece of the stalk laying on the ground, it seems to sprout in no time.
Thanks Carolb. Good to know, I may have to go back and get a piece, it was growing roadside in a wooded area, perhaps a little wet. Hope it is blooming when I go back to see it.
