No Hummingbirds

georgertJuly 12, 2007

I live in N. Ga about 30 miles north of Atlanta. Both me and my neighbor, an avid birdwatcher, have noted the lack of hummingbirds the past month or so. They were here this spring, but have disappeared.

Have any others in the area noticed the problem? Does anyone have an explanation?

Thanks

Does your neighbor belong to a GA birding listserv? The issue may be discussed there and other birders will be sharing their own observations, etc. Even if s/he isn't on the listserv, most of them post the messages on a website, so you may find some answers there.

There were definitely some weather problems for plants this past spring that affected flowering and therefore available food (nectar and the insects that are attracted to the flowers), at least in some parts of the country. I don't know about GA but if you got that hard late freeze and it zapped plants, that may be playing into the whole thing.

Hopefully others will have more thoughts.

Happy birding!

I also live near Atlanta and had a few hummers in the early spring. Have not seen many since the middle of June. Maybe every other day I see ONE. I don't why we have so few this year. In past years, I have had loads to visit. If anyone has an answer I would like to hear (see) it.
