hummingbird disappearance

birkie(z4 WI)July 5, 2007

We have several pairs of ruby throats nest near our farmyard and when the first broods fledged there were 7-8 birds visiting our three feeders, fighting, chasing, etc. About three weeks ago they seemed to suddenly disappear and altho we since witnessed one male courting a female, there has been almost no activity. We thought perhaps the hot weather sent them into the woods, and it was true that when it cooled off, a few reappeared, but certainly not in the numbers we saw earlier. A neighbor has commented upon the same phenomenon. We have seen no dead birds, but could this be West Nile or other disease?

I also have seen few hummingbirds this year. Earlier I saw a couple of males and females. Now I am seeing one female who I am sure has nested nearby. Wish I could find it I would love to watch. She comes by and checks me out whenever I am in one of my bright shirts. I have two feeders that I keep filled but no hummingbirds.

I saw this link on a different forum. Sounds like it fits your situation.

Here is a link that might be useful: Where did my hummers go?
