Different types of milkweed

snugDecember 30, 2008

In my backyard I have over 50 of the red and orange butterfly milkweed plants and I want to add more species of milkweed. Can you tell me if any of the following will grow here in Boca Raton. asclepias tuberosa, asclepias curassavica, asclepias incarnata. Please suggest what other plants I should plant to attract and feed the butterflies.

I have many of the scarlet milkweed which the monarchs and queens love. They love it more than the Giant or golden.
Bronze fennel and parsley is beautiful and the swallowtail caterpillars and I share it!
Fortunately most butterfly and caterpillar plants are the easiest to grow.
Porterweed, marigolds, lantana, cosmos, tall red Pentas and zinnias for example!
Their are some great books like Florida Butterfly Catterpillars and their host plants by Marc Minno,Jerry Butler and Donald Hall
also Florida Butterfly Gardening a Complete Guide to Attracting,Identifying and Enjoying Butterflies
Check out my slideshow and you can see how easy it is!

I have the red, orange and now a few of the yellow ones. The yellow ones are doing as good as the others.

Sometime ago I tried the seeds for the swamp and white milkweed but they never grew.

Hope it helps
