pea inoculation

Do you inoculate your English peas? I asked at the local feed stores and the Ace hardware store and they looked at me and basically said "Duh". They didn't know what it was. The one that did said he would order it and call me back. I'm still waiting for his call. That was almost a year ago. I want to do the right thing with them. Where can I buy inoculant?

Hi,I have never bothered to inoculate any legumes.I give them a nitrogen boost of blood meal at planting & then regular feedings of fish emulsion through the season. It is my understanding that the "fixing" bacteria occur naturally in the soil & once legumes are planted there, that their numbers will increase naturally...though not as fast as if the seeds were inoculated. From what I've read, once legumes have been grown in a bed, then even with rotating crops, they do not need to be inoculated again in future plantings.Personally,I think it is more a marketing strategy, than an essential item,as all my beans/peas have produced abundantly & many were planted in beds that have never had legumes previously grown in.I hope this helps & best of luck with your future harvest. You can't beat fresh English peas as a snack

I don't think my parents ever inoculated. I thought you had to till the plants into the soil. I'll have to research this.

I think some seeds are treated before they are sold. I seem to recall packages being labeled as inedible because they were treated.

What is Pinetree? I haven't seen any seeds here inoculated. The blood meal treatment of the soil would be feasible.

Pinetree Garden Seeds = 1 of my all-time fave seed co.s = )

It's in the 'seed-starting supplies' category...
