Soil (turface / perlite)

jamiedolan(4/5)October 18, 2010

Hello;

I just got a few Hoya plants from a garden center and home depot.

I am wondering if a mix of about 70% / 30% Turface to Perlite would work well for Hoya?

Would you add in any organic matter into the mix or keep them in an inorganic mix?

I can screen the Turface and Perlite, it is already a pretty fast mix even without screening it.

Thanks much;

Jamie

Hey, Jamie!

I happen to grow my Hoyas in pure, or nearly pure, Orchid Bark (which is simply Fir bark).
I would recommend that Bark be your "organic" component in the mix. Definitely screen your
Turface and Perlite. To adjust water retention, screen your Bark, as well. You can eliminate the
largest pieces of bark, and increase the amount of bark-dust to help "clog" or bridge the gaps
between larger particles.

Pugluvr (Nancy) also uses mixes of Bark, Turface, and various grit, and she is very
handy at growing Hoyas.

It just so happens that I'm rooting some Hoya cuttings right now. Thread linked below.

Hi Josh,

Thanks for the info. I've not been able to find any orchid /fir bark here (at least not in large bags). I also have only been able to find pine bark in large pieces. I have ground some myself, with disappointing results.

Nice looking plants you have going. It's good to know how to root these so I can make more.

Thanks,

Jamie
