help to id a hummer i can't find

TANG67August 13, 2011

I saw a hummer I could not ID from images on the web

bumble bee size 1 inch to 1.25 inch crown to tail tip

2/3 to 3/4 inch wide

1/2 inch beak

yellow throat (grot... sp.?)only accent color

light brown eyes to mid body where not yellow

dark brown mid body to tail tip

wings dark brown like tail

It was like it was wearing a shirt with dark sleeves and pants

I am in the upper peninsula of michigan near WI border

it is aug 13 2011

I tried to get a pic but is so small it looks like a dark dot in the purple flowers

no it was actually a hummingbird, not an insect even if it was bumble bee size

I was able to watch it for several minutes from less than 3 feet away.

Usually we have ruby throats sometimes we have irridescent green throats this is first ever that is sooooo small and soooo plain colored.

Thanks for help everyone.

Rather than the tomato hornworm sphinx, I'm going with one of the clear-wing sphinx moths, often known as Hummingbird Moths. There are three or four that are very commonly mistaken for hummers. They are quite small and pretty darned amazing.

The tomato hornworm sphinx, though interesting and beautiful aren't usually mistaken for a hummingbird.

Here is a link that might be useful: Check these little guys out!

My post to the OP was short thinking at least they would check out the Sphingidae family. Hornworm to Sphinx was just an association that a gardener would know.
