Hummers like allium right?

Eric580October 13, 2012

Just wondering because we have to plant garlic for a school project and I put it in the garden. We also have to take pictures and I was going to get a hummingbird at one of the garlic flowers. (I have five bulbs so I might let two flower for the hummers.)

From what i read, they are supposed to like them. But I have had allium (the big purple ones that are a couple of feet high) in my garden for over ten years now and have never seen hummingbirds feeding from them. And we get a lot of rufous here.

Hey, adding my .02 to this old thread - I've observed the hummer nectaring on Allium cernuum (nodding onion), this is a native wild Allium. Even got a picture somewhere, but it's on the desktop. Have not seem them on the chives. Those are the only 2 flowering onions I happen to grow in the gardens.
