I miss the hummers already so thought I'd share a couple of pictures from this summer. Hope you enjoy them!
Cool... Do the hummers pierce the skin of the grapes as in that first photo or do they wait for overly ripe ones?
Thanks for the shots, they're great. I never knew they would go for grapes.
I could be wrong but Im guessing they are going after the critters the overripe grapes might attract such as fruit flies and other small insects.
Honestly, I am not certain. I do think they are going after the grapes, but it sure could be the critters. I don't know for sure if they pierce the skin or not because I have so many others after the grapes (orioles, finches, grosbeaks, they all love the grapes), that I could not say for sure whether the hummers pierce them or only go after ones the others have already penetrated.
Now you all have me on a mission to figure it out. Unfortunately it will be next spring before I see these guys again.
Interesting for sure. I bet they do try for some of that sweet grape juice.
There was a nectar feeder on that same pole that the grapes were on but they often went for the grapes rather than the nectar.
I had to laugh this summer. I've been making a serious effort to buy and use only home-grown or locally grown food, or at the very least, grown in the US. But I had to buy grapes from Mexico and oranges from South Africa for the birds, LOL.
