Double flowered impatiens

dazed77(6)May 18, 2005

I went to the local nursery today looking for a flowering plant that I could put in direct sun. The lady who works there told me to buy this variety of impatiens. She referred to it as the 'double flowered' kind. Can anyone tell me what the botanical name for this type of impatiens is? And also if it in fact grows well in direct sun. Thanks

Its Impatiens walleriana and it wont take hot direct sun. If you live near the coast it will take sun but inland...no. Morning sun yes

I'm on the second year of growing white double impatiens with some variegated hostas. I plant them out front where they receive at least 7 hours of hot, full sun each day and last year they not only survived, but they flourished like crazy! I also grow singles the same way and I'm amazed at how well they do with all that sun and heat. I water them twice a day if I think they look thirsty. They were still blooming in late October last year- I might have to find an orange variety to match the Halloween decorations! MrImpatiens- it must be the high humidity here in the South that lets me get away with this?

You may be right. Truthfully I have seen them here with a good amount of sun but these are mostly at apartment complexes or other businesses that water them a great deal. In reguards to humidity I hear that people in Florida cant grow them past the summer because of the heat and humidity. Hmmmmm interesting, so much to learn.
