Looking for Dark Blue or Violet Hydrangea

Molineux(6b)April 24, 2006

I have a couple of ENDLESS SUMMER hydrangeas and I love them but I'd like to expand the color range among my shrubs. For me ES blooms in a clear sky blue or pastel pink. I'm looking for something darker to provide contrast. I read an article written by Richard Bir and J.L. Conner on reblooming bigleaf hydrangeas and two cultivars have attracted my interest for deep color, medium growth habit and ability to rebloom.

Are they good hydrangeas? I'd like to read your comments before I place my orders.

I'm also interested in NACHTIGALL (Nightengale), a beautiful Lacecap known for its deep indigo flowers.

Here is a link that might be useful: Bir & Conner article at NCSU

I have Nachtigall and the blooms are a very deep indigo. I love this plant. It is a very strong, stout plant. It is susceptible to late spring frosts, and one year out of four I did not have any blooms.

I believe Nikko Blue will become a deep blue if you keep the acidity high. They're gorgeous, in my opinion!

I had NIKKO BLUE and shovel pruned it because the flowers were too similar to ENDLESS SUMMER. OK to be fair the flowers were slightly darker (sometimes a bright blue) but not enough to warrent keeping it due to pruning issues (prune that sucker at the wrong time and you will get NO blooms the next year).

It also sounds like NACHTIGALL (Nightengale) is a bust because frost damage will destroy next year's blooms.

I'll investigate the other suggestions.
